Erik Magnussen

Erik MagnussenErik Magnussen (born 1940 in Copenhagen).

A trained ceramist from the Copenhagen School for the Applied Arts - graduated with a silver medal in 1960. For a number of years he worked for Bing & Grøndahl (Porcelain manufacturer) chiefly with the design of a number of dinner services, which challenged the traditional services.

In the last decade, his main interest has been furniture design (for Fritz Hansen, Thonet, Engelbrechts, Paustian and Brühl and Sippold). During a long interim period, has has designed many assortments of table tops (for Stelton in steel and plastic, and for Royal Selangor, Malaysia, in pewter).

Several of his works are represented in museums around the world.. Erik Magnussen received the Lunning Award in 1967. Ten years later, in 1977, he was awarded the Furniture Prize. In 1983, he was named Designer of the Year by the Danish Design Council, and a number of his products have received the ID Prize by the Danish Society of Industrial Design. Erik Magnussen received the Bindesbøll Medal in 1996.

In 2001, he was named Honorary Royal Designer for Industry by the Royal Society of Art, London. The ”Click” table series was awarded the Good Design Gold Prize in 1997 by the Japan Industrial Design Promotion Organization.

He was also awarded the “red dot; best of the best” in Germany for the Plasma chair (Engelbrechts) in 2001. His latest separate exhibition was at teh Danish Museum of Art and Design in Copenhagen (Feb-May, 2006).
