Piet Hein

Piet Hein

Piet Hein (1906-1996) - designer and writer. He embraced everything from physics to visual art, from sharp essays and poetry to furniture design and games. His most original effort as a writer and poet are the so-called Grooks (Gruk); short pieces of poetry with a witty or poetic point.

As a designer and architect, Piet Hein is known for his use of the super ellipse curve for the so-calles Super Ellipse table from 1969 (Fritz Hansen A/S), where the shape is a union of the rectangle and the ellipse. It was used on a large scale for Sergels square in Stockholm, and for buildings in Paris, Canada, Chicago and Mexico City.

A flat sine curve inspired Piet Hein to create the Sinus Lamp (1967) produced by Uniline A/S. Source: Danish Design Leksikon - DDC (Danish Design Center).
